Turkey

Turkey is a country well known for its history, culture and stunning scenery. It is consistently rated as one of the top 10 most visited countries in the world, and once you visit, it’s easy to see why!

With more than 130 peaks reaching over 3,000 metres, Turkey’s mountains are well worth a trip, especially in winter. The Palandöken resort in Erzurum even claims Europe’s longest natural ski run. But while the mountains are certainly incredible, it is the 8,333km of coastline around Turkey that appeals to the sun seekers.

Ocean Wise is anchored on the Turquoise Coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera. With the average daily temperature between May – October ranging from 26 to 34 degrees, it is the perfect place to soak up the sun and enjoy the beautifully clear waters of the Aegean Sea. As we sail around the Twelve Islands off Göcek or visit the 12 miles of pristine white sand dunes that make up the longest beach on the Mediterranean at Patara, guests enjoy breath-taking views on the experience of a lifetime!

Being based in such a fantastic location, it would be easy to get carried away listing all the wonderful aspects of Turkey. However, Ocean Wise wants guests to come and discover the beauty of Turkey for themselves.

Here are 7 interesting facts to get you started:

– Iztuzu Beach, to the west of Fethiye is a major breading ground for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle. Between May and October, over 300 nests are dug. These are protected by volunteers from the turtle centre and steady monitoring has shown a stable population in the area, which is great news for the turtles!

– Saint Nicholas was not born at the North Pole, but in fact born in Patara, Turkey! He was born to wealthy parents, and when they died, he spent his inheritance helping the poor and needy.

– Istanbul is the only city in the world to straddle two continents, with the Galata bridge spanning across the mighty Bosphorus River to connect Europe and Asia.

– Turkey is responsible for 75% of the world’s hazelnut export. Italy, the next biggest supplier, produces about 20% so Turkey is far and away in front. Why not try some lovely nutty Turkish baklava!

– It is also the world’s fourth largest producer of grapes, and a great place to sample a tipple from one of the earliest wine producing areas.

– Did you know that it is officially illegal to wear a Fez in Turkey? It was banned in the 1920’s and although it is unlikely anyone would get arrested for wearing one, it may be best to leave that particular item of clothing at home.
